Oliver Ames tops Foxboro again

Flynn leads Tigers past Warriors for 2nd time this week

- By GREG DUDEK

FOXBORO — The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many new wrinkles to this season, including taking on the same opponent just days apart.

After defeating Foxboro two days prior, Oliver Ames had another go-around with the Warriors on Thursday and didn’t seem to mind the challenge, at least for the first three quarters.

Behind a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds from Caroline Flynn, OA built a commanding doubledigit lead, but the Tigers almost squandered it, holding on late for a 51-47 Hockomock League road win.

“We tried to fine-tune a few things just based on what took place on Tuesday,” said OA coach Laney Clement-Holbrook. “It’s really hard to get things in and get them to understand. … It’s difficult to communicate. It’s hard to draw stuff up. You kind of have to recreate yourself a little bit.”

The first 16-plus minutes of action featured nine lead changes before OA (2-0) seized control with a 12-0 run in the early stages of the third quarter.

Caroline Peper began the spurt with a 3-pointer followed by a jumper from Jess Erlich and a bucket down low from Flynn. The Tigers then hit the offensive glass to punctuate the run as Erlich scored off her own miss and Flynn registered a putback as well to take a 34-24 lead.

“We did a good job in terms of rotation defensively and made it difficult for them,” said Clement-Holbrook, as OA totaled 12 blocks and forced 24 turnovers. “Offensively we were better executing in the third quarter, probably better than any of the other quarters.”

After more than doubling its first-half output in the third quarter, OA’s offense went stagnant, scoring only on six free throws in the final frame.

Foxboro (2-2) regained its composure over the final eight minutes to chip away at a 13-point deficit and got to within 50-44 with just under a minute left.

Jordyn Collins scored on a hard take and Camryn Collins netted a traditional 3-point play to make it a two-possession game, but Foxboro couldn’t complete the comeback.
