Words aren’t enough for new prez to heal the nation

- Joe Battenfeld

The speech of his life. A call for unity.

Get ready to hear those cliches about a thousand times on MSNBC and CNN after President Joe Biden gives his inaugural address.

But all the praise and gushing will ring hollow if Biden doesn’t actually deliver on his promises to unify the country in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection of the U.S. Capitol.

From behind the fortress that is the Capitol grounds, Biden’s words will ring hollow if Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer goes for blood and Democrats insist on moving forward with an impeachment trial.

Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and their merry band of Democrats and their enablers in the media appear bent on destruction — whether it’s vilifying Trump supporters or destroying what’s left of the former president.

And Biden up to now has done nothing to tamp it down.

It’s time for the new president to step up and assert his authority, declare the past is over and move on to a new administration.

Biden needs to lead by action, not just mouth words that he utters in his inaugural address from the Teleprompter.

Americans want to hear that the election and all the partisan warfare are over, and Biden has to back that up by calling off Schumer and others from their mission to prosecute the past.

Biden is right to be focused on healing the country but he needs to stop his party from being divisive and demeaning people for their political views. That has to end.

And he needs to actually listen to the other side — don’t just dismiss outright what they have to say. They are not “deplorables” and they don’t need to be “deprogrammed,” as Katie Couric asserts.

Biden should have the guts to speak out when party elders like Hillary Clinton fan the flames of division. The media will keep on hammering Trump because it’s good for their ratings, but Biden doesn’t need to do that anymore. The story now should be Biden, not Trump.

Biden should focus on one thing and one thing only — the coronavirus vaccine. Within a few weeks he needs to flood the zone with vaccines and reach as many first responders and older people as possible.

The vaccine is key to turning around the country and the economy and improving the nation’s psyche.

If Biden actually delivers on his 100 million doses in the first 100 days, his early presidency will be viewed as a success, no matter what else happens.
