Janey rolls out transition website

Acting-mayor-in-waiting campaigns off new post

- By SEAN PHILIP COTTER

Acting-mayor-in-waiting Kim Janey has rolled out a new transition website as she prepares to assume her temporary post — and the potential mayoral candidate is raising campaign cash from it.

The Committee to Elect Kim Janey, the acting-mayor-in-waiting’s campaign organization, blasted out an email on Saturday touting a brand-new website focused on her transition team. The email touted the fact that Janey will be Boston’s first Black and first female chief executive, and asked people to donate to her political committee, which would fund a mayoral run.

A first visit to this new website brings a viewer to a page seeking donations before continuing to the homepage for the transition effort.

Janey, currently the City Council president, has said she’s seriously considering a run for a full term in this year’s elections. But she’s so far refrained from jumping into the field that continues to expand and now has five major candidates.

A spokeswoman for Janey declined to comment.

Janey raised $41,960 in February after pulling $0.00 in January, the month it became clear she would become acting mayor.

Janey will take the reins if the U.S. Senate confirms Mayor Martin Walsh as President Biden’s Labor secretary, which could happen as early as this coming week.

The transition team is an informal group of people — an assortment of advocates, experts and longtime Boston-area pols — advising Janey on various matters. It’s separate from the senior staff she’s said she’ll bring in when she becomes acting mayor.

Janey’s website characterizes it thus: “We are asking folks to lend their names, networks, advice, and policy recommendations to President Janey during the lead up to Mayor Walsh’s departure as well as during the early tenure of a then Mayor Janey’s administration to help ensure the success of the city of Boston in the important weeks and months to come.”
