Spring into fitness
Get moving with great gear, fab workouts
How many of us have been living in sweats for much of the last year? Probably most, if we’re being honest. But with the light at the end of the tunnel getting brighter, the domination of athleisure in our wardrobes may (fingers crossed!) be about to take its normal-world place.
But not just yet — as vaccinations loom and summer beckons, it’s time to put those sweats to good use.
So take the next couple of spring months to give your body some workout love at home. Whether you’re getting strong, getting even stronger, getting flexible or shedding some pandemic pounds, check out these new machines, online classes and cool new workout gear to get you motivated.
Do whatever floats your boat: As low-impact, high results workouts go, pretty much nothing beats rowing. The Hydrow (hydrow.com), a Boston-based company, is to rowing crew what Peloton is to cycling. The ultrasmooth machine comes with a 22-inch color screen that brings you onto the water through classes with rowing experts, and workouts that are virtually no-impact but also full-body. My friends who have them say their abs will never be the same.
Embrace the big picture: It’s impossible to keep track of how many yoga and cardio classes there are on Youtube. But when you’re in the market for a holistic look at training your body, mind and dietary intake that will stick with you for a long time, jump into the big-picture class, “Fitness and Wellness Fundamentals” taught by Joe Holder on Masterclass (masterclass.com). Holder’s a Nike Master Trainer and GQ fitness specialist, and he’s a whiz at teaching us how to embrace the mental outlook to build the right fitness regimen, an unprocessed foods diet, and tune-up our biomotor skills — i.e., coordination, strength, endurance and mobility.
Get your gear on: Spring is so very much about color. So if you bypass the opportunity to work out in an explosive and rad tie-dye option like the Elation Tie Dye Tight ($98 on athleta.gap.com), you’re missing out. Especially given its compressive flexibility and wicking that pulls sweat away from the body.
If you need something cozier for, say, outdoor yoga, go in for the Supersoft Canyon Leopard Jogger ($138 on splendid.com). And pair it with a sports bra that can double as a workout tank — like the Live In Spray Dye Racerback Bra ($49 on nordstrom.com). It’s super pretty in grey truffle, and with its scoop neck and racerback, all you need is a cover-up for before and after your workout.
To that end, consider the Women’s Twist-Front Ribbed Tank Top — All in Motion ($16 on target.com) in a happy bright shade. It slips on and off with ease — especially after you’ve been sweating it up with your so-bright-they’ll-energize-your-workout Bala Bars ($55 on shopbala.com). The innovative bars have an even weight distribution and ergonomic design to push you through your workout — and into our next longawaited spring season.
