Windy, cooler today, then two nice days

- By Rick Sobey

The May-like weather that Massachusetts residents recently enjoyed is gone for the time being, as powerful wind gusts and much cooler temps arrive after Sunday’s soaking rainfall.

Bay Staters this morning should expect strong wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Wind advisories have been issued for southern New England, and power outages are possible.

“It should be very windy in the morning, and then subsiding throughout the day,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Kristie Smith, who’s based in NWS Boston’s Norton office.

“It’s been feeling like May, but it will be a lot cooler than what we saw last week,” she added.

The Boston area should see high temps in the low 50s today, and upper 40s in other parts of the state. With the high wind gusts, wind chills could be in the 20s and 30s.

After the widespread rainfall and downpours on Sunday, today is expected to be dry and sunny. The next chance of showers is Wednesday night into Thursday.

The moderate showers across southern New England come at a good time as pockets of Massachusetts and Rhode Island have been seeing abnormally dry conditions.

“We’ve had a bit of a precipitation deficit in March,” Smith said. “Hopefully, these two rain events will alleviate any drought concerns, and give us a good kickstart to the growing season.”

Before the potential inch of rain on Thursday as another cold front comes through, it’s expected to warm up on Tuesday and Wednesday. High temps should be around 60 on Tuesday, followed by mid 60s on Wednesday.

Then after the widespread showers Wednesday night into Thursday — with locally heavy rain possible — dry but unseasonably chilly weather is expected for Friday.

“We may struggle to see 40 degrees on Friday,” Smith said, adding, “spring doesn’t give us the highs without the lows.”
