Flyers go OT to beat Buffalo

-

Woe, the Buffalo Sabres. Phew, for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Ivan Provorov set up Sean Couturier’s tying goal with 1:29 left, and then scored 42 seconds into overtime, and the Flyers overcame a three-goal third-period deficit in a 4-3 win to extend Buffalo’s winless skid to 18 on Monday night.

The Sabres’ 0-15-3 streak matches the 18th longest in NHL history, and is the worst since the Pittsburgh Penguins went 0-17-1 during the 2003-04 season.

Kevin Hayes and Claude Giroux scored 10 minutes apart in the third period and Brian Elliott stopped 29 shots.

The Sabres haven’t won since a 4-1 victory at New Jersey on Feb. 23. They also extended their home losing skid to 0-9-2, the second longest in team history, and one short of the record set during during the 1990-91 season, when Buffalo went 0-6-1 with five ties.

Penguins 2, Islanders 1 — Casey DeSmith made 19 saves after Tristan Jarry exited following the first period with an upper-body injury and the Penguins held off the Islanders.

Given just a few minutes between periods to get himself ready, DeSmith responded with some spectacular play as the Penguins pulled even with New York for second place in the East by beating the Islanders for the sixth time in eight meetings.

Oilers 3, Maple Leafs 2 — Darnell Nurse scored 17 seconds into overtime in the ninth and final regularseason meeting between the teams.

After Oilers goalie Mike Smith stopped Auston Matthews on a 2-on-1 break right off the faceoff of the extra period, the Oilers broke the other way, with Connor McDavid passing to Nurse for his 12th goal of the season, and second in as many games.

Smith stopped 29 shots.
