Another Duxbury game nixed

A season which began full of promise has turned dramatically for the embattled Duxbury football program.

For the second straight week, the Duxbury school administration pulled the plug on a scheduled contest. Thursday’s game against Whitman-Hanson has been postponed and it doesn’t appear likely the game will be made up over the final three weeks.

Problems first surfaced when longtime head coach David Maimaron was not on the sidelines for the team’s second game against Silver Lake. It was later learned that he was suspended when the school learned the team had used anti-Semitic terminology in its audibles and moved quickly to cancel last week’s game against Hingham.

The Herald’s Matt Feld was the first to uncover that one of the phrases used was “Auschwitz.” Subsequent investigations have shown that several other anti-Semitic words were used in line audibles. The school fired Maimaron last Wednesday and he is currently on administrative leave as the school continues its investigation.

The school wasn’t ready to decide whether the game against traditional Thanksgiving rival Marshfield a week from Friday would be played. Officials said the team would be practicing during the week and a determination on the rest of the season would be made at a later time.

Whitman-Hanson was able to fill the void with Rockland and the two will play on Thursday night (6 p.m.) at Whitman-Hanson. Rockland was originally slated to play Middleboro, but the game was canceled.

Ava Thrumon dropped 20 points to lift Lynn Classical (3-3) to a 45-29 win over Somerville.

Boys soccer

Nathan Tavares notched a goal and an assist for Fairhaven as part of a 3-0 win over Somerset Berkley.
