Virus cases spike 2,252

More than 71,000 coronaviru­s vaccine doses were administer­ed in Massachuse­tts during the most recent day of vax data, while state health officials on Wednesday also reported 36 new virus deaths and 2,252 new cases as infections continue to spike.

A grand total of more than 3.5 million doses have been given since the start of the state’s rollout, according to the state Department of Public Health’s daily vaccinatio­n report on Wednesday.

That breaks down to 2,219,002 people who have received at least one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; 1,247,666 people who have received both doses of Pfizer or Moderna; and 88,043 people who have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

That’s an increase of 71,434 shots from Tuesday’s total. The previous daily vaccinatio­ns were 73,642 doses; 40,114 doses; 68,657 doses, 77,015 doses, 72,612 doses, 72,088 doses and 62,563 doses.

Overall, 1,335,709 people in Massachuse­tts have been fully vaccinated.

More than 4.2 million doses have been shipped to the Bay State, and nearly 85% of total doses shipped to the state have been administer­ed.

Meanwhile, the state on

Wednesday reported 2,252 new virus cases, as infections have recently been spiking. The seven-day average of confirmed cases is now 1,563 cases, a jump from 1,322 cases a few weeks ago.

The state’s count of estimated active cases is now 31,911 cases — up from 25,397 last week.

Wednesday’s 36 new virus deaths bring the state’s total recorded death toll to 17,185. The seven-day average of daily deaths is now 25, down from 77 daily deaths in late January.

Statewide hospitaliz­ations have declined since the start of the state’s vaccine rollout, but have climbed in the last week. Hospitaliz­ations on Wednesday did go down by 21 patients, bringing the total to 690 patients.

The seven-day average of the number of people hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 has declined from 2,347 patients at the start of January to an average of 659 patients now.

Of the state’s 17,185 total deaths from the virus, 8,949 deaths have been in longterm care facilities.
