Cooler temps chase heat

Dreary conditions are predicted for this week

- By rick SobEy

Hope you got out to enjoy the beautiful summer weather over the weekend because it won’t be back for awhile.

Much cooler air arrived in the Boston area Sunday morning, following a peek into summer on Saturday when temps soared into the 70s. The cool temps will stick around for at least the week ahead.

The temps in the 40s and 50s will go along with on-and-off light rain for the next several days.

“The warm weather we had Saturday, we’re not going to see that for quite some time,” said National Weather Service senior meteorologist Frank Nocera, who’s based in NWS Boston’s Norton office.

A backdoor cold front advanced through southern New England Sunday morning, causing dreary conditions for the Boston area and temps to drop into the 40s and wind chills into the 30s.

“It was quite a dramatic change from Saturday,” Nocera said.

The backdoor cold front affected eastern Massachusetts more than the western part of the state. The Berkshires were registering the state’s warmest temps in the 60s despite the area’s high terrain — an “atypical day,” Nocera said.

Today should be the coolest day of the week ahead, with temps expected in the 40s.

Then Tuesday and Wednesday should be in the 50s.

“We shouldn’t see a washout any given day, but we’ll see periods of rain for much of the week,” Nocera said.

The Bay State can use the rain right now. Almost the entire state is abnormally dry.

“We’ll take every raindrop we can get,” Nocera said.

The abnormally dry situation is “alarming” as March and April are typically the wettest time of the year, the senior meteorologist said.

There’s a chance for more significant rain amounts on Thursday into Friday, Nocera said, but he added that’s still “up in the air.”
