Biden’s approval rating takes a hit

Polls say he could lose to Trump in 2024

- By Joe Dwinell

President Biden should be praying for better polling days ahead.

Only 44% of voters surveyed approve of his job performance, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll out Friday.

Plus, an Emerson College poll shows Biden would lose to former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical showdown for president if both ran in 2024 — 47-46 percent. Biden has mentioned he intends to run for re-election; Trump has been cagey about it.

Biden is 78; Trump 75. Biden does defeat Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, a former Bay State governor and presidential Republican nominee, by a few percentage points in the Emerson

poll.

Pitted against DeSantis, the president polls 48% to 36%.

Up against Romney, Biden wins 42% to 23% — with 29% responding they’d vote for someone else.

“Historically, this data reminds me of 1912 when Teddy Roosevelt failed to win the Republican nomination from then-President Taft and created a third party dooming the Republican chances against Woodrow Wilson. This data suggests that Republicans want either Trump or a Trumpian candidate to be their nominee, or half of them may split from the party,” Spencer Kimball, director of Emerson College Polling, said in a statement.

As for the 2022 midterm elections, 71% of Democrats and 69% of Republicans say they are very likely to vote.

As for the war in Afghanistan, 68% of those surveyed by Emerson pollsters said they believe the United States lost the war in Afghanistan, while 32% believe the U.S. won.

In the blame game, the poll shows 49% think former President George W. Bush holds the most responsibility; 24% say Biden; 18% said former President Barack Obama; and 10% say former President Donald Trump.

But heading into the Labor Day weekend, Biden’s job approval, to quote NBC News, is “underwater.”

And, on the vaccine front, 53% of those asked in the Emerson poll say large public venues, such as concert halls and stadiums, should require proof of vaccination.

We’ll see how that goes at Saturday’s Boston College football game where proof of a a vaccine or very recent negative COVID test will be required to cheer on the Eagles vs. Colgate.
