Semien sets HR record for 2B

Bo Bichette homered twice, tiebreakin­g home run off Clay Holmes in the eighth inning that lifted the Toronto Blue Jays over the Yankees 6-5 Wednesday night, tightened the AL wild card race and ended New York’s seven-game winning streak.

Marcus Semien hit a goahead, two-run homer in the first off a faltering Gerrit Cole, setting a big league record with his 44th home run of the season as a second baseman. Semien topped the 43 by Davey Johnson for for Atlanta in 1973.

George Springer doubled on Cole’s first pitch and Semien homered on Cole’s sixth. Springer hit an RBI single in the second and Bichette’s solo homer in the third built a 4-0 lead against Cole, who allowed his first six hits on fastballs.

Kyle Higashioka hit a tying, two-run single in the seventh off Tim Mayza.

With the score 5-all, Bichette led off the eighth against Clay Holmes with his 28th home run, an oppositefi­eld drive that cleared the scoreboard in right-center.

Twins 5, Tigers 2 — Jorge Polanco launched a threerun homer and Michael Pineda was solid in his last start of the year as Minnesota beat Detroit.

National League

Brewers 4, Cardinals 0 — St. Louis’ team-record 17-game winning streak ended when Daniel Vogelbach hit a tworun homer that backed Adrian Houser and led Milwaukee to a win.

The Cardinals are 21-7 in September, tying the 1930 and 1942 Cardinals for most wins in the month.

Manny Piña added a solo homer for the NL Central champion Brewers, who have won four of five.

Braves 7, Phillies 2 — Max Fried pitched seven strong innings, Austin Riley drove in three runs, and Atlanta beat Philadelph­ia to move within one victory of a fourth straight NL East title.

Fried improved to 7-0 with a 1.46 ERA over his last 11 starts, and the Braves are 10-1 in those games. The lefty allowed two runs — one earned — and four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Marlins 3, Mets 2 — Miguel Rojas’ two-run single capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning Wednesday night, spoiling Taijuan Walker’s longest start in more than four years and sending Miami to a victory over New York.

Rockies 10, Nationals 5 — Trevor Story had four hits in possibly his final appearance at Coors Field the Rockies, helping Colorado beat Washington.

Ryan McMahon added a three-run homer in Colorado’s home finale.

Cubs 3, Pirates 2 — Willson Contreras drove in all of the three runs as Chicago beat Pittsburgh to end a sevengame losing streak.

White Sox 6, Cincinnati 1 — Carlos Rodón pitched five scoreless innings in a closely watched start ahead of the playoffs, and Chicago beat Cincinnati.

Tim Anderson and Gavin Sheets homered as the White Sox moved a seasonhigh 23 games above .500 with their fourth consecutiv­e victory. Sheets drove in three runs for the AL Central champions, and Leury García had an RBI single.
