- By RICK SOBEY

A man died at a construction site incident in East Boston Wednesday morning, according to police.

Boston police officers responded to 187 Sumner St., at around 11:19 a.m., for the reported accident at a new building under construction. The address is at the corner of Paris Street and near the Maverick T station.

Upon arrival, investigators found an adult male, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Boston Police Homicide Unit, the Boston Inspectional Services Department and Occupational Safety and Health Administration are all investigating the incident.

An OSHA spokesman said, “OSHA is responding to a reported fall at this address.”

The project involves the construction of a new 42unit, seven-story building and the renovation of an existing 26,800-square-foot building in Maverick Square.

The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health in a statement said the death of the construction worker is “a tragic reminder of how dangerous the construction industry can be and that employers must take every precaution to protect workers from numerous hazards on the job.”

“While we do not yet know name of our late brother, our thoughts are with his family, friends and the larger East Boston worker community during this incredibly difficult time,” said MassCOSH Director of Policy and Programs Al Vega.

Vega added, “With falls being an all-too-common way in which workers are severely injured or killed, it is urgent for all employers to keep their employees who work at heights at all worksites safe by always using fall prevention systems that have proven to stem needless loss of life on the job.”
