Chase target’s luck runs out at casino

- By Flint MCColgan

Police say a Dorchester man led multiple agencies in a chase from Revere to the Encore Casino in Everett, where he allegedly “attempted to fight several Troopers” before being tased and arrested.

A Massachusetts State Police trooper attempted to check on “a possibly emotionally disturbed” man — later identified as Dennis R. Penney, 40, of Dorchester — on the ramp from Route 60 to Route 1 in Revere at 7:14 a.m. Tuesday, according to an agency release.

As the trooper approached, Penney allegedly hopped back into an Infiniti SUV and fled through Copeland Circle, down Route 1 and through Chelsea, where he allegedly struck a car, causing state police to call off the pursuit and pivot to a strategy of boxing his vehicle in before it could cause more damage.

Throughout the chaotic spree, Penney also hit at least four police cruisers: three state police cruisers, one of them more than once,

and a Chelsea cruiser, cops said.

Penney then allegedly continued his chaotic spree onto Route 99 in Everett before finally stopping in front of the Encore Casino. Video footage of the end of the encounter released by Fox 25 News shows a darkcolored SUV — presumably the one driven by Penney — pulling into a small parking lane behind a parked bus as two state police vehicles in hot pursuit box the vehicle in from the side and the rear.

Then a man, presumably Penney, leaps out of the car and does a kind of hopping motion backward while flailing his arms at the troopers. Further action is obscured, but a state police release states that Penney was tased by a trooper before being placed into custody.

Penney was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital “for evaluation,” but the agency did not specify what he was being evaluated for.

After his stop in the hospital, Penney will be booked at the State Police Revere barracks. He will face assault and motor vehicle charges, as well as a narcotics charge.
