Beautiful spring dresses a stylish sign of the season

- Gretta Monahan

Spring is finally here. That means daffodils, warmer afternoons, no more layers of clothing, and plenty of people trying to sail on the Charles River. And it also means wonderful spring dresses.

You’ll need them for Easter, Passover, Mother’s Day and all those graduation parties right around the corner.

There’s still time to find a great one before the holidays. Here are some exceptionally pretty pieces in all price ranges and styles to consider.

One of the nicest things about dresses is how easy they are — just one choice and you’re good to go. That’s certainly true with the Sleeveless Pleated Midi Dress ($180 on whitehouseblackmarket.com). Its delicate pale floral pattern is a perfect match to the skirt’s feminine pleating. It’ll be the star of the show at any Mother’s Day brunch, family reunion or art gallery opening.

One of the prettiest patterns around is the navy blue and white florals of Aqua’s Toile De Jouy Sleeveless Floral Midi Dress ($118 on bloomingdales.com). I love the flirty sweetheart neck with ruffled trim and the slightly flared and ruffled hem. So simple, but with plenty of style.

Banana Republic’s Tiered Maxi Dress ($180 on bananarepublic.com) is a drapy, almost regal choice. Its soft and flowing shape is underscored by its full skirt and intricate ruching at the neck. Talk about spring drama!

I adore bold brights for spring as much as pastels. Go in big with Farm Rio’s Lilac Colorful Party Midi Dress ($225 on saksfifthavenue.com). Its elbowlength sleeves with bell cuffs add to the statement.

Leave it to the queen of dress designs, Diane Von Furstenberg, to take our breathe away with the Lily Silk-Viscose Voile Maxi Dress ($458 on dvf.com). In a mesmerizing mix of peach, soft pink and aqua blossoms, it moves like a dream in viscose-silk voile. Its flattering A-line silhouette and long, staggered hem are just the ticket for a graduation dinner out.

Another favorite designer of mine, Veronica Beard, has come through this season with the Vani Floral Dress ($528 on veronicabeard.com). The boho chic details—a ruffled hem and tasseled ties— add to the beauty of its rich, warm floral pattern. This is the kind of dress that can go anywhere.

It doesn’t get much more high-energy than Tadashi Shoji’s Long-Sleeve Floral Chiffon V-Neck Dress ($368 on neimanmarcus.com). Covered in showstopping hot pink and dark green blooms, it’s edged all around with black lace detailing and is cinched at the waist with a twist tie.

And on the shorter side, the Petra Embroidered Tunic Dress ($328 on anthropologie.com) by Devotion is made in Greece, and feels tailormade for warm weekends and happy afternoons. Wear it in all of its pinkand-green geometric goodness to wherever you want to spread a little spring.
