Getaway plans foiled

JetBlue flights keep getting canceled at Logan

- by Rick Sobey

Wanna get away? Well, you could be in trouble if you’re flying JetBlue these days.

The airline carrier with a Boston hub canceled dozens of flights again over the weekend, as the JetBlue passenger nightmare continues into a second week.

JetBlue had canceled 49 flights at Boston Logan International Airport on Sunday. The 49 nixed flights represented 77% of Boston Logan’s 64 overall canceled flights.

It was the same story on Saturday when JetBlue shelved 54 flights — which was 75% of the Boston airport’s 72 canceled flights.

Last week, the airline cited weather elsewhere in the country as the reason for cancellations.

“After a number of tough operating days this week that began with severe weather challenges and air traffic control delays up and down the east coast, we are continuing to work to minimize impacts to our customers,” a JetBlue spokesman said in a statement on Sunday. “Despite hiring more than 3,000 new crewmembers already this year, like many businesses, we remain staffing constrained and these disruptions exacerbate an already challenging staffing situation.

“In order to get our operation back on track this week and provide additional recovery options for the potential of additional April weather events, we are cancelling some flights this weekend and will be making a small schedule adjustment through the rest of the month,” he added.

Overall, JetBlue had canceled 146 flights on Sunday, so Boston’s cancellations made up 34% of the airline’s cancellations.

“We sincerely apologize to our customers for these disruptions, and we are working to cancel flights in advance whenever possible so they have time to adjust their plans and do not need to show up to the airport,” the JetBlue spokesman said.

JetBlue also had 90 delays at Boston Logan on Sunday, which was 52% of the entire airport’s 174 delays.

“While we believe April will continue to be challenging, we are bringing on hundreds of new crewmembers each week as we prepare for summer travel,” the JetBlue spokesman said. “We have also reduced our schedule from May through the summer.”

He added, “Given we anticipate continued industry challenges and heavy demand into the summer, we are planning more conservatively and trying to be proactive where we can with cancellations due to disruptive weather and air traffic control events.”
