‘Warm period’ on the way, 70 degrees possible

Get ready to put on some shorts and T-shirts this week.

Temps are expected to skyrocket across Massachusetts, even approaching 70 degrees on Tuesday, as a warm front sweeps through the region.

“We’ll probably be well above average until this time next week,” Bill Simpson, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, said Sunday. “We’re heading into a warm period.”

Sunny, dry and mild weather is expected on Monday as temps climb into the 60s.

Then a chance of showers will return Monday night into early Tuesday with a weak front moving through. Any lingering precipitation should taper off early on Tuesday as low pressure lifts offshore.

That will be followed by dry and warmer weather Tuesday afternoon. Temps could hit 70 degrees in some parts of the Bay State.

It should be dry for much of Wednesday, but the forecast becomes more unsettled late Wednesday through Thursday.

“We could have some showers from late Wednesday night into Thursday,” Simpson said.

Temps will still be warmer than normal in the 60s on those days.

Drier weather should return for Friday and Saturday, with temps in the low 60s.

The Boston Marathon is next Monday, so it’s still a bit far out for a forecast. But it appears at this point that temps will be around normal in the mid-50s — which is comfortable for running. There is a slight chance for showers, but it doesn’t look like a washout.

“Even if it does rain a bit, people are coming out of training in the winter,” said Boston Athletic Association High Performance Coach Mark Carroll. “So it would feel OK compared to the weather they trained in over the last few months.”
