Newton South girls set sprint medley mark

- By Joe reardon

BRAINTREE — There are certain benchmarks coaches key on during the track season to get an idea just what trajectory their teams are taking. For Newton South’s sprint medley girls it’s a matter of keep doing what has been working.

At yesterday’s MSTCA Div. 1 State Relays, the Lions’ lineup of Ellie Jolly, Nicole Woo, Lily Bulczynski and Amelia Everett bolted to a winning time of 4:00.7 to break the meet record. Head coach Steve McChesney was confident the foursome has plenty of race left in their legs for the bigger meets later in the season.

“They ran about as fast as I thought they would and that’s going to translate into a good 4x800,” he said.

Bulczynski, who will attend Middlebury College, ripped a 58.2-second personal best in her 400-meter leg in helping the Lions to the lopsided win. Everett closed hard with a 2:13.8 in the 800 leg

“Steve had told us what the record was but we honestly came just to run a fast time,” said Bulczynski, who owns a personal best of 2:18 in the 800 and has run the 600 in 1:37.37. “We all warmed up together and the big thing on our team is that we have a lot of confidence. We knew we could do it if we pushed hard on our legs.”

The Newton North girls are another team with a lot of confidence and it was very apparent as Joe Tranchita’s squad won the 4x400 (4:05.51) and the high jump team of Bronte Gow, Kiran George and Abigail Hogan took gold in the high jump. Clara Lake, Mia Baczko and Lia Knapp all posted personal bests in the Tigers’ win in the javelin.

Newton North scored 69 points by placing in 11 events to defeat a very strong Andover squad (56 points) to win the team title. Weymouth was a strong third

with 41 points. Skye PetrieCameron had the second longest effort in the shot put with 36-feet 10-1/2 inches for the Tigers and Gow leaped 5-1/2 in the high jump.

“This is something we really look forward to,” said Newton North’s legendary coach, Joe Tranchita. “It’s the purest team competition in track. We had top performances throughout the meet.”

St. John’s Prep waged a wicked duel with Newton

North’s boys and came away with a three-point win, 69 to 66. The Eagles registered wins in the 4x1600 (18:08.44), high jump (1710-1/4) and 4x110 hurdles (1:06.58), while putting up a slew of impressive performances.

“We knew Newton North and Acton-Boxboro were really good teams and we needed a really good day to compete with them,” said head coach Zack Lankow. “It was completely a team

effort.”

The Eagles got a solid showing from Drew McStay in the high jump as he cleared 6-2 and Ryan O’Leary got off a javelin heave of 140-1. Newton North’s Nick Greblick also shined in the javelin with his toss of 145-0.

The great Max Klein of Newton North led all shotputters with a monstrous throw of 62-8 and was also on top of the discus leader board with his 162-4.
