Rain showers, cooler temps after gorgeous start to May
Hope you got to enjoy the beautiful weather while it was here.
After the gorgeous start to May on Sunday, Massachusetts will be in store for rain showers, cloudy skies and cooler temps for much of the week ahead.
“Sunday is our best day for awhile, unfortunately,” said Bill Simpson, meteorologist at the National
Weather Service’s Boston office.
High pressure on Sunday brought plenty of sunshine, mild temps and dry weather for the first day of May. The region was caught between two areas of low pressure, triggering an area of high pressure that resulted in sun and light winds.
But then a warm front is expected to move in early today, spreading clouds and light rain showers into southern New England. Temps today should be in the upper 50s.
“We should see rain showers into Tuesday morning,” Simpson said.
It’s expected to remain cloudy with continued light showers and drizzle on Tuesday. However, it could dry out a bit during the afternoon as high pressure nudges in. Temps in the low 50s are expected.
Then more widespread shower activity is anticipated on Wednesday as a low pressure system develops south of the region. Temps should be in the mid-50s.
Drier weather appears to return on Thursday as temps jump into the 60s. There’s less certainty in the forecast for Friday and Saturday.
With April coming to an end, the National Weather Service’s Boston office released a data summary for the month. April had above normal temps across its four southern New England climate sites: Boston, Worcester, Providence, R.I., and Hartford, Conn.
The average temp in Boston was 50.1 for April, which was above the normal of 48.6. The high temp for the city in April was 73 degrees on April 13.
Boston had 2.32 inches of precipitation for the month, which was less than the normal 3.63 inches.
