Sen defends traitor accusation, blasts Musk’s Twitter bid

- By Matthew Medsger

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren doubled down on her rhetoric against some of her favorite targets Sunday, taking aim at the GOP’s allegiance to former President Donald Trump, Elon Musk’s move to buy Twitter, and boosting the need to forgive student debt.

“Democrats, independents, and some Republicans are trying to defend our democracy and there is a group that their whole goal is just to follow one man, and if they can get that one man in power that’s what they want to do,” she said.

Warren appeared with WBZ’s Jon Keller on Sunday, when she was asked about comments regarding Rep. Kevin McCarthy. Warren also appeared on WCVB’s “On The Record.”

Warren last week called McCarthy a liar and a traitor after he denied quotes in a New York Times article in which he reportedly told other Republicans he’d planned to push for Trump’s resignation. McCarthy said he’d never said such a thing. The Times then released the recordings from which they were quoting the California

Republican.

Last week, McCarthy defended his actions during a meeting at party headquarters, suggesting he was merely running through possible scenarios as Democrats moved to impeach Trump in the aftermath of the violent siege.

In a meeting with his House GOP colleagues, McCarthy said he never asked the president to resign, according to Republicans in the room. He has also publicly said he did not do so. The Times did not report that he asked Trump to resign, only that he told Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and other members he would.

Keller pressed Warren on her use of the word “traitor” and asked if McCarthy’s actions rise to the level of someone who “provides aid and comfort to our enemies, which is what a traitor is.”

“I don’t know how else you look at it,” she said. “We’re talking about someone who provides aid and comfort to insurrectionists.”

According to Warren, the continued allegiance to Trump is just plain antiAmerican.

“That is anti-democratic and it undermines what this country has stood for since the revolution,” she said.

Turning toward another target, Warren told the hosts of “On The Record” that Elon Musk’s plan to buy Twitter may be anti-democratic too.

“He’s not just buying something that produces cars,” she said. “What we’re talking about here is a way that tens of millions of people communicate with each other.”

There isn’t another Twitter,

Warren said, and every attempt to create one has failed.

“We need some rules in order to create more competition, that way if people don’t like what Elon Musk does, they can go elsewhere,” she said.

The Bay State Democrat also pushed for student loan debt cancellation, saying Biden has indicated he is working on a proposal, despite his saying canceling $50,000 was off the table.
