Revs squander late lead in draw with Columbus

- RICH THOMPSON

Columbus Crew attacker Erik Hurtado scored in the 89th minute to secure a 2-2 tie with the Revolution before 26,421 on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution (3-5-2) were poised for their third straight home win when Adam Buksa scored on a header in the 82nd minute

The Revs will face FC Cincinnati in the Round of 32 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament on Wednesday night at Gillette. The Revs will resume MLS play at Atlanta United on May 15.

“We conceded two goals with our center backs not being able to get inside their strikers,” said Revolution head coach Bruce Arena. “We did a very poor job in that regard because we should have walked off the field with three points.

“Our guys performed very well in the second half and I’m disappointed they didn’t get three points.”

Columbus went up 1-0 on a slick collaboration in transition during the 26th minute. Pedro Santos made a deep run into the Revs’ third of the pitch before sliding the ball to Derrick Etienne Jr. on the right flank. Etienne lofted the ball into the penalty area where striker Miguel Berry redirected it by Matt Turner for his second of the season. Turner made a huge stop on Santos in stoppage time before the intermission.

Arena attempted to provide a scoring presence when he subbed in Jozy Altidore and Emmanuel Boateng in the 68th minute.

The ploy paid off in the 72nd minute when Boateng set up Dejuan Jones for his first goal of the season. Sebastian Lletget set up Buksa for his fourth of the season.

“We went three in the back and three guys out wide we thought could get some balls in front of the goal,” said Arena.
