Spring has arrived

Wave of temperatures expected this week, but the cold is in the past

Boston residents should anticipate a range of temperatures this week, with several days of mild conditions capped by another hot weekend.

“The week ahead is somewhat of a wave,” said Kristie Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Boston office. “We’re going to continue with the humid and really mild conditions through (Monday).”

Today will be close to 80 degrees, but residents should also anticipate muggy conditions with dew points in the 60s, Smith said.

A cold front is expected to start moving through the area today, with storms approaching from the west. Thunderstorms could impact western Massachusetts in the evening, but nothing more significant than a bit of overnight rain into Tuesday is forecasted for the Boston area, Smith said.

That is because thunderstorms are expected to weaken as they head eastward toward Boston, and as the cold front moves through the area, she explained.

“Tomorrow is our best shot for really significant precipitation and it looks really dry for the rest of the week,” Smith told the Herald on Sunday.

Mild conditions are expected on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with sunshine and temperatures in the low- to mid70s expected, Smith said.

A second consecutive warm weekend is in the forecast for Boston; temperatures will be nearly 80 degrees on Friday and are expected to reach the 90s on Saturday. The sun will retreat a bit on Friday, said Smith, who anticipates partly cloudy skies and some rain in the evening.

The weekend will be capped off by more mild conditions next Sunday, but temperatures will still be close to 80 degrees, Smith said.

While Saturday will be hotter than usual, much of the week will feature average conditions for Boston. The average-high temperature for the city this time of the year is 66 degrees, Smith said.
