Avon Old Farms shuts out Governor’s Academy on road, 23-0
Avon Old Farms made the long trek and left with the Kevin Driscoll Bowl trophy.
Georgia-commit Ryan Puglisi threw for 162 yards and a touchdown as the Winged Beavers defeated Governor’s Academy 23-0 Saturday afternoon in Byfield.
Avon Old Farms (6-3) took an early lead on its first offensive play. Jackson Harper took a direct snap from center, sprinted right and raced 53 yards to paydirt. Ryan Hornyak added the PAT to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.
The Winged Beavers cashed on a costly penalty to double their lead just before half. Governor’s Academy (6-3) was called for holding on a fourth down, keeping the Avon Old Farms drive alive. Four plays later, Puglisi hooked up with Christian Alliegro on a 15-yard TD strike.
Alliegro then stepped it up at the defensive end. A 56yard kickoff return by Krystian Pothel gave the Governors great field position at the Winged Beaver 15-yard line with less than 30 seconds left in the half. On the ensuing play, Alliegro picked off a pass at the goal line to end the threat.
Avon Old Farms quickly went to work in the third quarter. Aided by a pair of penalties, the Winged Beavers drove 52 yards in five plays with Luke Thorbahn capping it off by running for a 3-yard score.
Hornyak closed out the scoring on a 32-yard field goal with 9:29 left.
In a Div. 4 state semifinal, Liam Donaghey caught seven passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns, while returning a kick 99 yards for a third score as No. 2 Grafton (11-0) defeated sixth-seeded Foxboro, 21-12.
Logan Jost threw for 179 yards and two scores as David Prouty (4-7) defeated Martha’s Vineyard, 20-7.
Charlie Anischik netted a hat trick as No. 1 South Hadley (20-1-2) topped sixth-seeded Blackstone Valley, 5-2, to win the Div. 4 state boys soccer championship.
Ava Magnuson scored twice and Addy Jerome added the other tally as No. 2 Sutton (175-1) won the Div. 5 state girls soccer title with a 3-2 win over No. 1 Monson.
