‘Very active weather week,’ with snow and wintry mix ahead
Sunshine and spring lovers, look away.
An active weather pattern is about to bring several shots for precipitation this week across Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Service. That will include a few chances for mixed wintry precipitation and snow.
“It will be a very active weather week this week,” Alan Dunham, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, told the Herald on Sunday. “Several systems will be passing through the region.”
While some of the week will be wet, Presidents Day is expected to be mainly dry. Monday’s high temps will be in the mid-50s for the Boston-area. It should be mostly cloudy, with a slight chance for some rain during the afternoon.
Then on Tuesday, it will be rainy for much of the day. The system may bring a period of higher elevation snow to wintry mix.
“An initial burst of rain and wet snow moves across the region (Tuesday) with a coating to 2” of accumulation possible with greatest risk in the interior,” NWS Boston tweeted.
“A more significant winter storm will bring a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain Wed nightThu,” the forecasters added.
Before that system comes through Wednesday night into Thursday, daytime temps on Wednesday should be in the mid-40s amid mostly sunny conditions.
Then the low pressure approaching from the southwest will bring a wintry mix Wednesday night into Thursday, with perhaps a swath of modest sleet accumulations to a portion of the region. Some snow could be mixed in, too.
“Would say there is very good chance we need some Winter Weather Headlines Wed night into Thu for a wintry mix,” reads the National Weather Service’s forecast discussion.
Friday should be mostly sunny, but it will feel quite chilly later in the day. A cold front is expected to bring windy conditions, followed by very cold air. Low temps Friday night will be down into the single digits to lower teens, with wind chills below zero.
Saturday will remain very cold, and there will be a chance for a period of snow or mixed precipitation later in the day into Sunday.
