Two Newton police officers were attacked and punched in the back of their heads — with one of the cops getting knocked unconscious — by a suspect at a domestic violence call Saturday night, according to police.

Both officers were treated at a local hospital and later released, while the suspect was arrested following the alleged attack.

Newton Police responded to a domestic violence call Saturday night. When officers arrived, they were able to intervene but not before becoming victims themselves.

As the officers went to make the arrest, the “assaultive, out of control suspect” ran into an apartment, police said in a statement.

Then after the officers tracked down the suspect, the perp began fighting the officers. The suspect is accused of trying to get the officers’ service weapons and punching both officers in the back of their heads.

One officer was “temporarily knocked unconscious after being violently struck in the head,” police said.

Eventually, officers managed to apprehend the suspect, whose name will not be released due to confidentiality laws related to domestic cases in Massachusetts.

Both officers were transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and were later released. Both officers are sore but recovering.

“This incident underscores the danger that police officers face every day,” police wrote. “Officers respond to each call and put their lives on the line to protect victims and the community.

“Attacks upon police officers will not be tolerated and we look forward to justice for victims and our officers,” the department added. “Our officers are in our thoughts and we wish them a quick recovery.”
