Richard J. White of Salem died Saturday evening, March 4, 2023 at Salem Hospital. Born in Chelsea, he was raised in Revere and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1955. He apprentice­d as a printer with the Boston Record newspaper and retired from the Boston Herald in 2002 after a career that spanned 47 years. He was an Army veteran who was drafted in 1958 to 1959, was recalled to active duty in 1960 and served honorably until 1961. He met his wife, Margarita, in 1962 and they were married in Rath, County Offaly Ireland in 1963. They made their home in Salem since 1968 and were together for 48 wonderful years until she passed in 2012. He was a devoted and generous husband, father, uncle, grandfathe­r and a true gentleman. His family was the center of his universe and he was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. Mr. White is survived by two sons, James White and his wife Debra of Suffolk, VA and Daniel White and his wife Annette of Rowley; two daughters, Shelagh Amann and her husband Scott of Hartsdale,

NY and Elizabeth Hegarty and her husband Joseph of Salem and seven grandchild­ren, Olivia, Brian, Joseph, Molly, Jack, Evelin and Oliver as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predecease­d by his wife Margarita, his daughter Rosemary and his sister Kathleen. His funeral will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 10:30 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, on the corner of North Street, Salem followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin Street, Peabody. Visitation will be prior to the funeral on Thursday 09:30 AM to 10:30 AM in the funeral home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, West Peabody. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributi­ons may be made to the Hogan Regional Center, PO Box A, 450 Maple Street, Hathorne, MA 01937.
