Boston English stays hot, ousts Lowell Catholic
The Boston English boys basketball run continues.
David Ballenilla scored 13 points, while Jayson Edwards added 12 as 22nd-seeded Boston English (13-8) advanced to the Div. 3 quarterfinals with a 61-54 win over No. 27 Lowell Catholic. Alijah Iraola had a game-high 17 for the Crusaders.
Josh Jean Charles scored 22 points as No. 2 Burke (18-4) cruised to an 80-44 win over No. 15 Tyngsboro in a Div. 4 second-round contest.
Girls hockey
McKenna Colella scored the game-winner with 2:15 left and Megan Carney added an empty netter as No. 2 Duxbury (22-1-2) advanced to the Div. 2 state semifinals with a 4-2 win over No. 10 Malden Catholic.
Sarah White had a hat trick as No. 2 Notre Dame (17-6) defeated seventh-seeded Bishop Feehan 5-3 in a Div. 1 state quarterfinal. … Maddie Mrva’s second goal of the game in double overtime lift No. 3 Shrewsbury (19-2-2) past No. 6 Hingham, 3-2. … Remorse Serra scored twice as No. 13 Billerica/Chelmsford (11-11-1) handed fifth-seeded Winthrop its first loss, 3-2.
Boys hockey
In a Div. 3 quarterfinal matchup, Mauricio Sousa buried a breakaway goal with five seconds left as No. 5 Watertown/Wayland (14-6-3) defeated No. 4 Nauset, 3-2.
Jake Vana had a goal and an assist as No. 1 St. John’s Prep (20-2-1) defeated ninth-seeded St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 5-1 to get to the Div. 1 semifinals.
Class notes
Grace Oliver of Noble & Greenough School was named the 2022-23 Gatorade Massachusetts Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Oliver is the fourth Gatorade Massachusetts Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Noble & Greenough School.
The 6-foot-2 junior guard/ forward led Nobles to the NEPSAC Class AA title this past season. Oliver averaged a double-double, recording 13 points, 11 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game while shooting 58 percent from the field. … Wellesley’s Vincent and Xavier Ferreira have been chosen to represent the United States as part of the American Football Worldwide ELITE TEAM. The team will travel to Italy for a week of educational touring, serving as ambassadors for American football and culminating the week participating in a rare and special international game against a national 20U American Football team representing Italy. The game will take place at Vigorelli Stadium, in Milan, on Saturday, April 8.
