Catalina Sandino Moreno faces fears in new season of ‘From’
“From” is the hit horror series where anyone who enters a small town discovers they are trapped. They can’t leave and, worse, are at the mercy of murderous monsters who only come out at night.
For Catalina Sandino Moreno and Eion Bailey who play trapped, stressed out parents Tabitha and Jim Matthews stuck with their two children Julie and Ethan, it’s no surprise the series continues for a second season Sunday on AppleTV+.
With the pandemic, Bailey, 46, noted, “We were all trapped in a place we couldn’t escape when the show started. That’s exactly why I figured this would find some success and go on. Because this resonates with people. We’ve all felt in the last couple of years, feeling stuck and not knowing what to do, how to get out.
“Allegorically, I think the show really fires on all cylinders and I’m not surprised that people connect with it.” Added Moreno, 41, in a joint Zoom interview, “Everyone was scared of this virus that we didn’t quite know what it was. So this show was perfect timing to be scared.
“The premise of the show is: Be scared of something that you can’t see. And when you see it, you’re going to die. Basically, you’re confronting the monster. And that was what was being put in our heads: You’re not going to see the virus but if it gets you, you die. So something like this resonates with what we were living at the moment.”
As time passes are Jim and Tabitha changed?
“Jim has gone from what is probably natural, looking around at all times and trying to assess the situation as the parent and how to secure the family in a protective way to this second season where he is really starting to get focused on what this place actually is, beyond what it looks like on the surface,” Bailey said.
“How does it operate? Why does it operate? Why does it exist? Therefore, if he can truly understand what the nature of it actually is, there might be a way to figure out how to get out. So, there’s a grounding and centering for Jim that, without getting caught up in emotion, is about logic and puzzle solving.”
For Moreno, “Tabitha confronts her fear this season. She sees that it’s okay to change and she’s not that scared anymore. She knows there are monsters, she knows the reality of the situation — and she conquers her fears, which is wonderful. But I don’t think she changed! I think she evolves from what was happening last season.”
