MULLIN, Margaret Mary (Fulham)

-

Just four days before her 104th birthday, died Sunday morning October 23, at home in Osterville, surrounded by her children.

Margaret Mary Fulham was born on October 27th, 1918, in her grandmother’s home in Winthrop, MA. She was the fourth of five children born to John Norris Fulham and Mary Maloney Fulham. She attended Mount Saint Mary Seminary, a girls’ boarding school in New Hampshire run by the Sisters of Mercy.

Margaret entered Radcliffe College at the age of 16 in the Fall of 1935, graduating in 1939. She put aside plans to attend Yale Law School when World War II arrived with her sister away teaching as a Sister of Mercy, her three brothers away in the Armed Forces, and her parents in ailing health. She remained at home to care for her parents until their deaths in 1946.

The following year, Margaret married Sam Mullin, of Syracuse, NY. They moved to Cleveland, OH, where Sam became CEO of Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Company, a manufacturer of aircraft landing gear and other aerospace products. In Cleveland they raised six children, Ann, Mary, Sam, John, Margaret, and Barbara and remained until Sam’s sudden death in 1969.

Margaret then moved the family to Osterville, where they had spent Summers. She became an active participant in Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, resettlement of Vietnamese refugees, the Housing Assistance Corporation, the Osterville Library, and the Garden Club. She was appointed by the Governor to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and served for many years as Chair.

Nicknamed ‘Peg’ during her married life, in later years Margaret became known to her family and friends as ‘Greta.’ Her son, John died in 2011, but she is survived by five other children along with four sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law, 23 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was intelligent, witty, thoughtful, warm, cheerful, and kind. Above all, she had a deep and lasting faith, which anchored her to the good in this world and guided her hope in the next.

A Funeral will be held at 11 AM on November 12, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville. Donations made in her memory would be received gratefully by the Sisters of Mercy or the Housing Assistance Corporation, Hyannis. Her family requests your prayers for all those in need.
