KASLOW, John F.

-

John F. (Jack) Kaslow, a resident of Andover, died on January 9th after a long illness. He was 90 years old. Born in Lawrence, MA, the son of Charles and Helen (Minihan) Kaslow, Jack graduated from Central Catholic High School where he was Valedictorian of his Class of 1949. In 1953, he received his Engineering Degree with High Honors from Lowell Technological Institute, now the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and, in 1980, received the College of Engineering’s Eminent Graduate Award. Jack was also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School.

Following service with the U.S. Army during latter stages of the Korean War, Jack married the love of his life, Barbara J. (Fox) Kaslow, and the same year began a career in the electric utility industry when he joined a unit of the New England Electric System, now the National Grid Company. Jack worked in virtually every sector of the business before he became Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the parent New England Electric and President of its New England Power Company subsidiary. He served on the Boards of Directors of New England Electric and on the Boards of its Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire retail subsidiaries. Jack also served on several regional and national utility committees and as Chairman of the industry’s Research Advisory Committee. He had national credentials as an industry expert on environmental matters and had testified before State and Congressional Committees. Most importantly, Jack was widely known for his compassionate leadership and his genuine interest in, and respect for, those who worked with him and for him. Jack was a mentor to many and always willing even in his retirement to respond to a call for advice or assistance.

After his retirement from New England Electric, Jack served as an energy industry consultant and as an Executive Advisor to the Electric Power Research Institute and to the Logica Corporation. He also served on the Boards of the Doble Engineering Company and the Clean Harbors Corporation.

Jack was an active parishioner of Saint Patrick Parish in Lawrence and served for many years on the Parish Finance Council. He was also an ardent supporter of Central Catholic High School and had served on the school’s Development Committee for several years.

One of the greatest joys in Jack’s life was serving along with his wife, Barbara, as a volunteer at the Cor

Unum Meal Center in Lawrence where he developed a deep affection for and a lasting friendship with many fellow volunteers and with many of the guests they served.

Though Jack had many precious moments in his career, volunteer work and personal friendships, his most special moments were those spent with his family and his extended family – all of whom he enjoyed sharing his time and abundant love with. There were many very wonderful summers at the beach, many treasured vacation trips and many grand parties and competitive card games!

Jack was predeceased by his precious wife, Barbara, in 2021; and is survived by sons, Charles and his wife Valerie, Thomas and his wife Lora and John Jr.; two beloved granddaughters, Danielle and Tara; and dear nieces Kathleen Murphy, Peg Bailey, Ellen Murphy and Amanda Cox. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and William Murphy; and a brother Charles Kaslow.
