Of Lexington, April 25, 2023. Beloved husband of April A. Austin. Loving father of Benjamin Averbuch of Brooklyn, NY. Devoted brother of Gloria Averbuch and her husband, Paul Friedman of Montclair, NJ. He is also survived by two nieces, Yael Averbuch West and Shira Averbuch.

Richard served as Executive Director of the Massachuse­tts Coalition for Serious Illness Care. He was Chief Marketing Officer at Mass. Gen. Hospital, Director of Marketing Communicat­ions at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Senior Director of Communicat­ions at Mass. Hospital Associatio­n, and Vice President at Mass. Business Roundtable. He earned his MPA from Harvard Kennedy School in 1985.

A native of San Francisco, Richard attended Lowell High School and Sonoma State University. His early career was in theater as a performer and educator at the Round House Theatre in Bethesda, Maryland.

After retiring in 2019, he renewed his passion for the arts. He delighted in coaching older adults in acting scene study workshops and improvisat­ion theater.

A Celebratio­n of Richard’s Llife will be held Saturday, May 6, at the Lexington Historical Society’s Depot building, 13 Depot Square, in Lexington, at 11 a.m., with Visitation immediatel­y prior to the service, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Massachuse­tts Coalition for Serious Illness Care’s Medical Schools Collaborat­ive.
