Local library offers Summer Reading Programs for children, teens and adults

The Calhoun-Gordon County Library is hosting several summer reading programs this year, for children, teens and adults.

“On your mark, get set, READ” is the theme for the 2016 Children’s Summer Reading Program. All programs for the children’s program will be held at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church gym.

On Friday, June 3 at 10:30 a.m., Peter Nestler, a seven-time world champion rope jumper, who currently holds 11 Guinness World Records, will give a performanc­e which includes his rope jumping, unicycling and will also include audience participat­ion.

On Friday, June 10, at 11 a.m., Gutsy Fox will be at the gym for his high-flying, slam-dunking reading show.

On Wednesday, June 15 at 10:30 a.m., Storytelle­r Josie Bailey, who has over two decades experience of storytelli­ng across the state of Georgia, will entertain children at the gym.

Another Storytelle­r, Barry Stewart Mann, will have everyone stretching, swimming, jumping, riding, running and scoring big on Friday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m.

The 2016 Young Adult Summer Reading Program will be presented throughout June at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library.

On Thursday, June 2, young adults are invited to learn how Essential Oils can help support many body functions and learn ways you can save money using Essential Oils. Free samples will be given out. The program runs from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Pre-registrati­on is required.

On Saturday, June 4, young adults can see a presentati­on on Chattoine Cosplay. Teens will learn how to pick a character, how to get involved in cosplay, how to put on character makeup and get to hand out with a few character. The program runs from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

On Tuesday, June 7, young adults can participat­e in Zumba with Tennille Aker from Fitness First. Join the fun, which begins at 4 p.m. and lasts until 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, June 11, a writing class will be offered for the Young Adult program. Local author and founder of the Calhoun Area Writers, Karli Land, will be offering a workshop that will transform your writing and get it ready for publishing. Learn the ins and outs of the industry from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

This year, the library is offering an Adult Summer Reading Program. “We want to show the Northwest Georgia Region that adults read, too,” said CGCL Assistant Branch Manager Elizabeth Howard of the inclusion of an adult reading program this year.

On Thursday, June 9, adults can join Angela Deaton with Fitness First for Yoga, learning ways to meditate and relieve stress. Bring your own mat or a large towel. The program lasts from 4 – 5:30 p.m.

On Thursday, June 15, a Writing Workshop will be held with John Shivers, who has authored nine novels. He will help participan­ts discover what to write and learn how to write it. The program lasts from 4 – 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, June 18, crafting fanatic Karli Land will teach the basics of creating Homemade Spa Products. With basic instructio­n, participan­ts will create their own spa products to take home. Pre-registrati­on is required for the program, which runs from 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Participan­ts of the Adult Summer Reading Program are asked to read one book during the month of June. Participan­ts in the Children and Young Adult Reading Programs are asked to read as many books as possible during the month.
