Early voting continued this week for the Republican General Primary Runoff Election with Gordon County seeing slight voter turnout. Early voting began last Tuesday, July 5, and will run through Friday, July 22. The primary runoff is to decide the office of Gordon County Chief Magistrate between incumbent Ricky Silvers and challenger Pat Rasbury and is the only race in the runoff.

“We have had 482 voters cast their ballot early,” said Shea Hicks, chairperson of the Gordon County Board of Elections.

According to Hicks, those who are eligible to vote in the Republican General Primary Runoff are those who voted a Republican ballot in the general primary, those who voted a nonpartisan ballot in the general primary and those who did not vote in the general primary. Anyone who voted on the Democratic ballot in the general primary is not eligible to vote in the primary runoff.

In the General Primary, Silvers received 44.81 percent of the vote, with Rasbury receiving 34.14 percent. A third candidate, Larry Bain, received 21.05 percent of the vote. Because none of the candidates received the required 50 percent plus one vote during the general primary, a runoff is being held to decide the office.

Registered voters can vote early at the Gordon County Courthouse Annex, located on Piedmont Street behind the Gordon County Courthouse, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. All precincts will be open on Tuesday, July 26 for the Republican General Primary Runoff Election from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
