Jessie Smith

Mrs. Jessie Higdon Brannon Smith, 90, of Calhoun, died Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Gordon Health Care following several years of declining health. She was born in Florida on Dec. 24, 1925, daughter of the late Ed and Dolly Williamson Higdon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Howell Brannon; her second husband, Woodrow Smith; daughters Karen Lea Brannon and Kathy Lynn Brannon; brothers Ebb Hidgon, William Higdon and Grady Higdon; stepsons Everette Smith, Jack Smith and Otis Smith; a stepdaught­er, Retha Smith Stewart; and a sister, Agnes Higdon Dudley.

Survivors include her son and daughter-inlaw, Jeff and Deborah Brannon of Calhoun; her daughter, Trisha Brannon of Fairmount; sisters Mina Hidgon Floyd and Frances Higdon Elliston, both of McDonough; a granddaugh­ter, Paula Brannon Adams (Chad) of Sonoravill­e; and a great-grandchild, Halley Claire Adams. A stepdaught­er, Carolyn Smith Fowler, of Alabama, and a host of step-grandchild­ren, step-great grandchild­ren, nieces, and nephews, also survive.

Services to honor the life of Mrs. Jessie Higdon Brannon Smith were held Tuesday, July 19 at 11 a.m. from Pleasant Grove (Ryo) Baptist Church with Rev. Guy Kent officiatin­g. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearer­s serving included Bruce Kelly, Steve Brannon, Freddie Childers, Billy Higdon, Danny Griffin, Ronnie Childers and Van Teague.

Jessie Brannon Smith was a long-time member of the Fairmount Community, and a graduate of Pickens County Vocational Technical School. She retired from the City of Fairmount as City Clerk, and was a member of Pleasant Grove (Ryo) Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Monday, July 18 from 5 until 8 p.m.

Doris Harris

Mrs. Doris Lemons Harris, age 75, of Shaw Road, Adairsvill­e, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at her residence.

She was born in Calhoun, on Feb. 26, 1941, daughter of the late Harry Lemons and Willie Mae Worley Lemons. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Harris worked at Super D in Calhoun for several years, Liberty Mutual Insurance and retired from The Bank of Adairsvill­e. She was an avid reader and loved spending time with her family, especially when she was “winning” playing board games. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Frank Howard Harris.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Donna Harris of Plainville and Mitchell and Rachel Harris of Calhoun; grandchild­ren, Cody Harris, Courtney and Isaac Goad, and Thad Harris; siblings, J.T. and Francis Poole of Marietta, Lamar and Myrtle Poole of Rome, Clinton and Glenda Poole of Rome, Henry and Sandra Lemons of Adairsvill­e, Linda Dyer Battaglia of Adairsvill­e, Jerry Lemons of Adairsvill­e, Randy Lemons of Adairsvill­e, and Neal and Debbie Lemons of Adairsvill­e; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Barton Funeral Home, Adairsvill­e, with Rev. Randy Jackson, Rev. Dutch Scott, and Rev. Roger Fisher officiatin­g while Isaac Goad and the King Family provided musical selections. Interment followed in Eastview Cemetery, Adairsvill­e.

Pallbearer­s included Ronald Poole, Chris Dyer, Carman Caldwell, Brad Harris, William Smith and Todd Lemons. Other nephews served as honorary pallbearer­s.

Maggie “Faye” Johnson Fields, age 56, of Ranger, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 16, at Gordon Hospital following a sudden attack.

Faye was born April 4, 1960 in Moultrie, daughter of the late Murray and Mary Johnson. She was married to the late Jeff Fields for 37 years before his death on March 4, 2016. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by father and mother-in-law, George and Blanche Fields.

She is survived by two daughters, Joan DeFreese and her husband, David, and Melody Hogan and her husband, Jason, all of Calhoun; three grandchild­ren, Tiffany Goforth, Anthony Brake and Alanna Hogan all of Calhoun; four brothers, Glenn Johnson and his wife, Nancy, of South Carolina, Joe Johnson and his wife, Carol, of Pelham, Howard Johnson of Louisiana, and Lee Roy Johnson and his wife, Marie, of Fairmount; two sisters, Stacy Ferro and her husband, Bert, of Lawrencevi­lle, Carrie Christmas and her husband, Mike, of Calhoun; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol Boyd and her husband, Stanley, of Fairmount, Martha Bullock and husband, Chester, of Ranger, and Roy Fields of Conyers.

Graveside rites were conducted Tuesday, July 19 at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in Oakman, with Rev. Michael Bullock and Dr. Stephen Pearson officiatin­g. Family and friends served as pallbearer­s. Honorary pallbearer­s included members of the O. B. K. Motorcycle Koalition.

Eleanor Frost

Eleanor Jane Frost, of Calhoun, died Saturday afternoon, July 16, on her 88th birthday at her residence, following months of declining health.

Eleanor was born July 16, 1928, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Fred W. Benskin and Irene Newton Benskin. Besides her parents, her husband Howard Frost preceded her in death in 2009. They were married in 1956. The Frosts moved to Calhoun in 1977. Eleanor was a volunteer at Gordon Hospital for over 30 years, and was a familiar face at the registrati­on table of blood drives during those years. She was a member of the Calhoun First Presbyteri­an Church where she served as the organist. She was also the pianist for the Calhoun Rotary Club.

She is survived by her two daughters, Carol Frost of Calhoun and Karen Edge and her husband, Zane, of Johns Creek; one son, John Frost and his wife, Margie, of Powder Springs; two grandchild­ren, Sabrina Frost and Ryan Frost. One sister, Arlene Hartman and her husband, Wally, of Maryville, Tenn., and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Hogan, of Okemos, Mich.; two nieces, two nephews, two cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and strong-willed cat “Oobe” also survive.

Graveside rites will be conducted Thursday morning, July 21, at 10 a.m. from the Chandler Cemetery. Services to celebrate the life of Eleanor Jane Frost will be conducted at 11 a.m. following the interment at the Calhoun First Presbyteri­an Church with Dr. Bob Butler officiatin­g.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, July 20, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bobbie Jean Cobb

Mrs. Bobbie Jean Cobb, age 80, of FolsomGlad­e Road, Adairsvill­e, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2016 at Gordon Hospital.

She was born in Gordon County on Jan. 15, 1936, daughter of the late Coley and Ama Lee Sutton Colston. She was of Christian faith. Although she was “bossy”, she was the great- est wife, mother and grandmothe­r. She enjoyed doing word searches, cooking for her family, working in her garden and canning. She was preceded in death by parents and daughters Jennifer Hight and Delaney Gravitte.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Cobb, of Adairsvill­e; daughter, Audrey and Greg Franklin of Rome; grandchild­ren Clint (Angela) Hight, Keri (Matt) Wright, Courtney (Jason) Miles, Ariel Gravitte, Beau Franklin and Raquel Franklin; great-grandchild­ren, Luke Hight, Landry Wright, Aiden Puente and Wesley Miles; sisters, Joy (Jack) Thacker and Rabun Helton; brothers T.W. (Jean) Colston and Jerry (Mary) Colston; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Cedar Creek Baptist Church, Adairsvill­e with Rev. Larry Hibberts and Rev. Barry Adcock officiatin­g. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Hayes Cemetery. Pallbearer­s will be Brian Adcock, Jerry Gravitte, Clint Hight, Clinton Hight, Danny Mealer, Chris Pierce and Chris “Scooby” Hall. Honorary pallbearer­s will be Beau Franklin, Doyle Adcock, and Dearl Adcock.

Howard Johnson

SFC Howard Barker Johnson USAR (R), 86, of Adairsvill­e, died at his home on Sunday, July 17, 2016, following several months of declining health. Howard was born in Harlan, Ky. on Jan. 5, 1930; he was the son of the late William T. and Lena Pittman Johnson. In 2002, his wife, Mollie Gwin Johnson, preceded him in death. Howard served in the Army, B CO ‘3d BN 11th Special Forces Group (ABN), retiring as Sergeant First Class. He also served in the United States Army Reserves after retiring from active duty. When he retired from service, he was an airplane mechanic and inspector for Pan Am and Lockheed. For more than 15 years, he was an active member of Old Sugar Valley United Methodist Church. A vivacious man, he loved life, and he loved his family very deeply. His family described him as an adrenaline junkie; he liked jumping out of airplanes, nature, SCUBA diving and flying. Even in his last days, he often proclaimed, “life is good.”

Survivors are his children, Bruce Johnson of Calhoun, Timothy Wayne Johnson and his wife, Stacey R., of Dalton, Patricia Addison and her companion, Russ Craft, of Savannah, and Victoria Wright, of Calhoun; his grandchild­ren, Sabrina McCoy, Samantha Hubner, Crissy Davis, Chris Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Shannon Weldy, Kayla Vance, and Timothy Johnson Jr.; his great-grandchild­ren, Ace, Scott, Mollie, Reese, Raye, Donovan, Kourtney, Kendell, Howie, and Nevaeh.

The Johnson family received friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 from 5 until 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home. Burial, with military honors, will follow the service at Old Sugar Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery. The United States Army Honor Guard will serve as pallbearer­s; fellow veterans of the 11th Special Forces Group will serve as honorary pallbearer­s.
