Northwest Georgia claims nearly $7.5 million
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has recently awarded 55 contracts for statewide construction projects totaling over $ 171.3 million. The 17 counties of northwest Georgia claimed nearly $ 7.5 million in construction project awards. These projects were advertised for bids in May. Bids were received in June and contracts awarded on July 1.
Georgia DOT’s first obligation with funds resulting from Georgia’s Transportation Funding Act ( TFA) is to maintain and improve existing infrastructure. This month, bridge replacements represent a significant investment with $ 72.6 million in eight awarded contracts statewide.
The project to resurface 7 miles on State Route (SR) 53 Business between SR 515 and SR 108 in Pickens County is this month’s top dollar investment in northwest Georgia. This section of SR 53 needs resurfacing because the existing pavement is deteriorating. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of May 2017, at a construction cost of $ 1,731,414.
Other projects in northwest Georgia include:
Resurfacing 8.661 miles on SR 136 in Dade County, beginning east of SR 58 and extending to the Walker County line
Guardrail replacement at various locations in Bartow, Gordon, Catoosa and Whitfield counties
Signing and striping upgrades at various locations in Chattooga, Walker, Gilmer and Pickens counties
Guardrail replacement at various locations in Dade County
Information on schedules, lane closures and detours will be made available in advance of construction activities. For general information about the Transportation Funding Act of 2015, visit www. GAroads. org.
In their 2015 legislative session, Georgia lawmakers addressed the state’s critical transportation infrastructure needs with passage of House Bill 170, Georgia’s transportation funding bill. The Transportation Funding Act ( TFA) of 2015 is expected to generate an estimated $ 870 million in the first fiscal year. This sustained annual revenue will be used to fund much- needed routine maintenance and capital improvements.
