Former Jacket plated after triple to lift Corpus Christi

From MiLB reports

CORPUS CHRISTI — Antonio Nunez’s bounding hopper up the middle scored former Calhoun High standout Mott Hyde from third base to give Corpus Christi a 5-4 walk-off win over Midland Friday at Whataburger Field before 5,659.

Hyde opened the home ninth with a triple to right-center field off Jake Sanchez (5-5) on a ball almost run down by diving right fielder Tyler Maricov. Next up was Nunez, who spoiled a pitch before the game winner, which came on a 93-mph fastball.

Hooks ace Keegan Yuhl posted five shutout innings before turning the game over to Eric Peterson. Yuhl allowed a hit in each frame and struck out two in a 95-pitch, 62-strike effort.

The Hooks (16-19; 63-42) hung three runs on Brandon Mann in the third. Nunez reached via a fielding error on third baseman Matt Chapman, and an out later Garrett Stubbs lined a single into right. J.D. Davis then ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line before Nick Tanielu traded places with him by doubling to right-center.

Mann went on to throw 81 pitches ( 55 strikes) over 5 2/3 innings and was charged with two earned runs and six hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Midland (23-12; 56-49) put up its first run during the eighth, Peterson’s one-out walk of Chapman biting the home club. Albert Minnis balked Chapman into scoring position and Marincov lined a two-out bloop RBI single into shallow center field just beyond the reach of a diving Hyde, who closed from his second base position

Chase McDonald’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly plated Stubbs (lead-off double) as Corpus Christi took the run right back.

The insurance of a three-run lead was insufficient as Midland tied the contest against closer Aaron West. West yielded three hits, including a run-scoring double from Franklin Barreto and Beau Taylor’s two-out, two-run bases-loaded single. None of the runs were earned, however, the result of a fielding error committed by Hyde.

Culberson triples, scores in OKC win Colorado Springs, Colo.

— The Oklahoma City Dodgers took advantage of several Colorado Springs Sky Sox miscues to go along with big nights from O’Koyea Dickson and Jose De Leon in an 8-4 win Saturday night at Security Service Field.

With the win, the Dodgers improved to a season-best 18 games above .500 at 62-44. By defeating the second-place Sky Sox (50-54), the Dodgers now lead the American Northern Division by 11 games, marking their largest lead of the season.

Dickson led the offense by going 3-for-5 with three extra-base hits and two runs. On the mound, De Leon rebounded from his first loss of the season and turned in seven strong innings.

The Dodgers raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, as each of the first five batters all reached base. Dickson led off the frame with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch. The Dodgers proceeded to load the bases after two walks and a fielder’s choice. Colorado Springs pitcher Hiram Burgos tried to pick off Zach Walters at third base, but his throw was wild, allowing a run to score and the other runners to advance one base. James Ramsey then sent a RBI single to center field to make it 3-0.

More shaky defense by the Sky Sox aided the Dodgers in the seventh inning. Former Calhoun High standout Charlie Culberson led off the inning with a triple, and Yadiel Rivera’s relay throw went into the stands, allowing Culberson to score.

Later in the inning, Dickson doubled with one out. Walters came up next and sent a grounder toward the middle. Rivera ranged to his right and fielded the ball, but his throw to first base got past Garin Cecchini, as Dickson came around to score.

The Dodgers didn’t need any help on their final run of the night. In the top of the eighth inning, Corey Brown hit a pinchhit home run out to left field to make it 8-3. The homer was Brown’s second in as many days and his 15th of the season.
