About the Director

Larry Brown is taking the helm of the Marching Yellow Jackets this year after the retirement of longtime band director Michael Clark. Originally from Chattanooga, Brown loves going home to visit as often as possible with his mother, sister and nephew, who still live there, and you can often find him cheering for the Mocs.

Brown has been in the Calhoun area for nearly 20 years and has taught in both Gordon County and Calhoun City Schools. “I’m still an active performer,” said Brown. “I believe it’s good for the band to see that their director still pursues his or her instrument.”

Brown loves going to the mountains and hiking and has found several good hikes within an hour’s drive of Calhoun.

Brown will be assisted this year by co-director Sara Knapp.

About the Show

The Calhoun High School Marching Band program this year is comprised of several upbeat tunes sure to get fans out of their seat. “First we are playing ‘All My Life’ by the Foo Fighters,” said Brown. “This is an intense song that has a lot of energy and lot of sound. We will follow that up with ‘Play That Funky Music’, by Wild Cherry, to honor Mr. Clark and the years he and his family dedicated to building the CHS band into what it is today. Michael loved this tune on the field and I hope he enjoys what we’ve done with it this year.

“Our drum line will then play an original drum break entitled ‘Diddles-R-Us’, composed by our percussion instructor, Robert Melville,” said Brown. “Our fantastic color guard and national champion majorette line will be featured next in the Beatle’s ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, followed by our closing number, ‘House of the Rising Sun’, written by the Animals. This year’s show has a lot of emotion and energy tied to it. I hope those who get to see it enjoy it.”

The band will continue with tradition this year and will be taking its bi-annual trip to Orlando, Florida in the Spring. Up to 150 students will spend Spring Break enjoy- ing the theme parks on this three-day trip. Be sure to look out for the Marching Yellow Jackets annual produce sale to help them raise necessary funds.
