Gordon County 4-H: It’s not what you think
Gordon County 4-H to hold Kickoff Party and club meetings
What do you think of when you think of 4-H? Many people think of farming and livestock, and while that certainly is a part of 4- H and the historical foundations of the organization, 4- H offers youth many opportunities for leadership, service and skill building in other areas, including performing arts, communications, shooting sports, cooking and meal preparation, visual arts, fashion design, science and engineering, entrepreneurship, workforce preparation, and many more.
At the same time students begin a new school year, Gordon County 4- H begins a new program year and will hold a Kickoff Party and parent meeting on Monday, Sept. 26 at 6 p. m. at the Gordon County Extension office at 1282 Highway 53 Spur SW in Calhoun. Youth will meet new friends, play games, elect officers and enjoy activities, while parents will learn about opportunities for their children and themselves in 4- H. All school- age children and parents are welcome to attend at no cost. Supper will be provided.
In addition to the kickoff party, youth in grades 5- 12 will have the opportunity to attend monthly meetings at their school, and a home school club meeting is held monthly at the 4- H office, with the first one scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 2 p. m.
Gordon County 4-H offers nearly 15 competitive teams, as well as a range of individual competitive events, along with opportunities to develop and practice leadership skills, engage in community service, attend camps and conferences, and receive scholarships and other awards.
New this year will be a horse club, the first meeting of which will be held Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 6 p. m. at the 4- H office.
