Firefighters with Gordon County Fire and Rescue, along with crews from Georgia Forestry and Bartow County Fire spent hours Thursday afternoon and evening battling a wildfire off of Union Grove Church Road, which is located off of Highway 53 East in Calhoun.

According to the incident report, the fire was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. at a location of 141 West Road, Adairsville in Gordon County. The caller stated the fire was approximately 50 feet in diameter. By the time the fire was reported by media, it had spread to 4-5 acres. Georgia Forestry service estimates that 60 acres were burned overall.

The fire continued to burn throughout the afternoon into the evening. Several firebreaks were reported and units assigned to monitor the breaks to ensure fire containment. Georgia Forestry had two bulldozers on the scene working to contain the fire. According to Gordon County Fire and Rescue, the winds throughout the afternoon were constantly changing direction and making it difficult for the Forestry Service to contain the fire.

GCF&R crews, along with Georgia Forestry and Bartow Fire Department worked to protect area structures. No structures were reported as damaged during the incident.

Throughout the afternoon, Gordon County Sheriff Deputies assisted with traffic control as West Road and McGill Mountain Road in the area were closed.

Around 9 p. m. Thursday, Gordon County Fire and Rescue reported that all of their units had completed their assignments and were released from the incident. The Forestry Service continued to provide units in the area to monitor any flare-ups. GCF&R warns that smoke and embers will be present for several days, maybe longer without rain.

According to GCF&R, the cause of the fire was undetermined after the investigation.
