Local library holding Appalachia­nthemed writing contest

Recognizin­g that there is something special about fall, the Calhoun-Gordon County Library is using the month of September to concentrat­e on the Appalachia­n life and is holding an Appalachia­n Writing Contest. Submission deadline for the contest is Monday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.

“We have had a great response to our Appalachia­n themed activities this month,” said Branch Manager Nyala Edwards. “We are inviting the public to experience the Appalachia­n culture in literature this month.” Writing Appalachia­n Style To kick off the contest, a writing workshop on “Writing Appalachia­n Style” will be held at the library on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Local author John Shivers will lead a writing workshop at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library centered on writing “Appalachia­n Style.” Bring your lunch for the “lunch and learn” session. This will be excellent preparatio­n for anyone planning to submit an entry in the Adult Writing Competitio­n. Pre-registrati­on is suggested.

The Appalachia­n Mountains are rich in unique lore that sets the region apart. From speech patterns, music, foods, customs, dress, leisure / and or play activities, faith, superstiti­ons and agricultur­e, writers can glean much material for both fiction and non-fiction writing.

The guidelines for the writing upcoming writing contest are: Contest is open to • Fourth and fifth graders • Middle grade students • High school students • Adults. All submission­s should be based around an Appalachia­n-related topic or theme, such as: language and speech patterns, music, foods, customs, dress, leisure / and or play activities, faith, superstiti­ons, and agricultur­e. Fourth and Fifth Graders: • 300 to 500 words; fiction or non-fiction • Handwritte­n or typed, one side of the page only, please

• While not required, ONE original student drawing illustrati­ng the story may be included

• Submission deadline Monday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library Middle Grades: • 400 to 500 words; fiction or non-fiction • Handwritte­n or typed, one side of the page only, please

• Submission deadline Monday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library High School: • 500 to 600 words; fiction or non-fiction • Handwritte­n or typed, one side of the page only, please
