Rotary speaker discusses Amendment 1 and state of local schools

- Staff Reports

Bruce Potts, principal of Sonoraville High School, was guest speaker at the most recent Rotary meeting on Sept. 22, 2016. He was introduced by Rotarian Dianne Kirby, Calhoun Rotary’s Membership Development Chair.

Mr. Potts shared that Gordon County and Calhoun City Schools place well on academic outcome measures compared to other districts in the state. He attributes this to a variety of factors: strong community support, including the fact that we have a large manufacturing base; accessible, quality health care and support from the public and private sectors of our schools.

He spoke of early learning programs as being essential for later academic success and also programs that target potential dropouts and prepare every deserving student to plan for college or technical education after high school.

On Election Day, Nov. 8, 2016, Georgians will go to the polls to, not only vote for president, but also to vote on Amendment 1 to the State Constitution. This would allow the governor of Georgia to take over schools that do not meet academic benchmarks. This is a very important issue and every citizen of the state should carefully study the issue and vote accordingly.
