Myers overall ribbon winner at Northwest Georgia Regional Fair

Donna Myers was named the total ribbon winner for the 2016 Northwest Georgia Regional Fair.

Overall, Myers won 76 ribbons in the categories of woven baskets, Native American-styled jewelry, greeting cards, photography, home decor and plants. “My main category is plants,” said Myers. “I like to do a lot of potted plants; mostly things like succulents that I mix in a pot with ferns and many variations of begonias.

“I’m in a garden club, The Garden Buddies,” continued Myers. “We try to enter every year and support the club.”

This is the third time that Myers has put entries into the contests at the annual fair. “It’s just a lot of fun,” said Myers. “It’s a lot of work, but I enjoy doing it.”

Myers said that she continuously works on her projects throughout the year, and then enters them in the fair. “A lot of the things I entered this year are things I’ve done since last year,” said Myers. “Like one of the baskets I made because I needed something to carry casseroles to church. I also made another basket for my dog’s supplies. Just things I have made throughout the year that I have not entered before.

“Of course, the plants I have in the yard,” said Myers. “This was a tough year for plants due to the drought. It was hard to find good specimens to enter.”

Myers grew up in Atlanta and moved to Carroll County as a young adult to get away from the traffic. She then moved to Oklahoma for graduate school, where she ended up living for eight years. That’s where she began to develop a love for gardening.

She moved back to Georgia to teach at the University of West Georgia for five years and then moved to Calhoun in November 2007.

Myers can’t say enough good things about entering the contests of the Northwest Georgia Regional Fair. “It is extremely organized,’ said Myers. “The team that manages all the entries are amazing. The process runs smoothly. If anyone thinks they would like to enter, they should do it. It’s very easy to enter your items and it’s all online with the entry forms and information. The people are very nice.”
