Stomp that Down Beat! Local library to hold beginner clogging class

- Staff Reports

Who says libraries are quiet and staid?

Anyone who has enjoyed toe tapping string band musicians and buck dancers at Calhoun’s Harvest Festival or Georgia String Band Festival can now try a hand—or foot—at the dance.

Patricia Bohlen, experienced clogger and instructor, will teach beginning clogging at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library on Monday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. Come and join her as she discusses the history of clogging, the different clogging styles, and the health benefits associated with it. She will demonstrate the clogging steps and will allow attendees to try some as well if desired.

Clogging is an early folk dance imported to this country from the British Isles. It is still popular all over the country as well as in the South. Performed solo or in groups, it has been an important form of socializing. Also called buck dancing, clogging is accompanied in the South by old-time, or string band, music.

If you want to make some noise, wear hard-soled shoes (not required) and join Patricia Bohlen for dancing and just plain old-time fun.

The program is sponsored by the Harris Arts Center and Shaw Industries. It is planned to coincide with the exhibit Reading Appalachia, on loan to the library from the Knox County ( Tennessee) Public Library and the East Tennessee Historical Society. It will be on display through Saturday, Oct. 22.
