Griffith continues strong work for undefeated Alabama
Several former local football standouts have gone on to the next level to play college football and many are making an impact for their teams this season.
More than 30 players that graduated from either Calhoun, Gordon Central or Sonoraville can be found on college football rosters throughout the nation, and several of those saw action in their team’s most recent game.
Here’s a roundup of the former local players who appeared in the box score and how they did last week:
ADAM GRIFFITH, Alabama, Calhoun
Griffith made 7-of-7 extra points in the Crimson Tide’s 49-30 win at Arkansas on Saturday. The redshirt-senior kicker also handled eight kickoffs, averaging 61 yards per kick with four touchbacks. He was once again named Special Teams Player of the Week along with three other teammates.
GABE FREEMAN, West Georgia, Calhoun
Freeman, a senior linebacker, tied for the team lead in tackles with nine total stops ( four solo, five assists) in West Georgia’s 38-27 loss at Valdosta State on Saturday. He also had a pass breakup.
CHANDLER CURTIS, Mercer, Calhoun
Curtis started at wide receiver for the Bears and led the team in receptions with eight for 55 yards in their 52-31 loss at Chattanooga on Saturday. The junior also had a 21-yard punt returned, returned to kickoffs for a total of 34 yards, blocked a punt and rushed for a yard.
MATT EDGAR, Lindsey Wilson, Sonoraville
Edgar, a senior kicker and holder, successfully held on 5-of-6 extra points in the Blue Raiders’ 41-27 win at the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday to move them to 7-0 on the season.
SEBASTIAN WILLER, Georgia State, Calhoun
Willer, a redshirt-junior, started at right tackle for the Panthers in their 41-21 home win over Texas State on Saturday.
DREW McENTYRE, The Citadel, Calhoun
McEntyre, a freshman, started at right guard in the Bulldogs’ 38-14 win over North Greenville at home to move to 5-0 on the season.
JIREH WILSON, Wofford, Calhoun
The freshman linebacker Wilson had two solo and one assisted tackle for a total of three in the Terriers’ 31-19 victory at Western Carolina on Saturday.
DJ PRATHER, Chattanooga, Gordon Central
Prather, a redshirt-junior defensive lineman, had one solo tackle in the Mocs’ 52-31 home win over Mercer on Saturday.
THOMAS LESTER, West Georgia, Calhoun
Lester, a sophomore receiver, had two catches for 10 yards in the Wolves’ 38-27 loss at Valdosta State on Saturday.
DREW McCRACKEN, Kennesaw State, Calhoun
McCracken, a sophomore long snapper, participated but didn’t record any stats in the Owls’ 49-16 win at home over Missouri S&T last Saturday.
NOTE: TRENT FRIX, Georgia, Calhoun
Frix, a junior long snapper, participated but didn’t record any stats in the Bulldogs’ 28-14 win at South Carolina on Sunday.
BLAINE ANDERSON, Shorter, Calhoun
Anderson, a freshman defensive lineman, participated but didn’t record any stats in the Hawks’ 27-23 home loss to Clark Atlanta last Thursday.
