HAC to offer Market Basket-Making workshop

- Staff Reports

The Harris Arts Center will offer a Market Basketmaking workshop with instructor Tisa Barton on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a. m. to 2 p. m.

The cost of the class is $ 55 for HAC members or $ 65 for not- yet- members. All supplies are included. Each participant will leave with an heirloom quality basket at the end of the day. The basket will feature an accent band of dyed reed in beautiful autumn tones and a dyed design in its handle. Students need only bring a sack lunch and an old towel.

“My love for basket weaving began in the mid 90’s when I took my first class,” stated the instructor. Since that time, Tisa has studied with many Master Basket Makers across the Southeast, exploring numerous techniques and weaving materials. After a few years, Barton took the next step. “I began designing baskets and selling at shows and galleries in the area”. Soon appreciative buyers approached the artist and asked her to teach. “I found that I loved sharing my knowledge and passing on the skills I had learned from others.”

Tisa has come full circle and is now considered a Master herself. Barton continues to take classes from others to keep the creative spirit alive but also passes on the magic. Barton has also taught classes at Georgia Basketry Conventions, Basket Guilds, Alton Holoman Heritage Art School, Cheiftian Museum, RACCA and Georgia Gourd Society Shows.

The Market Basket workshop is generously sponsored by a grant from Shaw Industries. Those interested must call the arts center at 706- 629- 2599 to register by Oct. 31. www. harrisartscenter. com
