Warriors host hungry Model squad

GC’s tough schedule continues with playoff contender

- By Alex Farrer

It’s been a tough road so far this season for the Gordon Central Warriors and this Friday doesn’t appear to be any easier.

Coming off a tough loss at Armuchee, the Warriors return home to host Model at 7:30 p.m. at Ratner Stadium.

Gordon Central (0-7, 0-4) couldn’t get anything going last Friday against Armuchee, who earned their first region win with the 43-3 dominant victory. Their lone points came in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Bogar Aguilar to avoid the shutout.

Two of the Warriors’ main offensive weapons, quarterback Martavius Harris and running back Branson Towe, were held down by the Indians’ defense. Towe was held to just 12 yards rushing, and Harris threw for less than 100 yards

The Devils ( 5- 2, 2-2) head into Friday’s matchup coming off a couple tough losses of their own. They lost to Pepperell and Chattooga consecutively sandwiched around a bye week, but the Devils still have hopes of moving closer to clinching their fifth straight trip to the state playoffs.

Model is led by quarterback Kyler Eldridge and running back Chris Dublin, who both play on defense as well.

Dublin has run for 742 yards and nine touchdowns on the season, including 94 yards last Friday against Chattooga. Eldridge has thrown for 584 yards and run for 487 more. He has 13 rushing TDs on the season.

Gordon Central is looking to turn things around after losing 12 straight games dating back to last September. They own a 6-4 lead in the all-time series against Model, including winning the last five overall. They last played the Devils in 2011, winning that one 52-27

There aren’t a lot of bright spots right now for the Warriors as they continue to struggle in Region 7-AA. And Friday’s game likely won’t change the current streak Gordon Central is on. The Devils are talented, deep and hungry coming off two losses.

Model wins,

Score:

35-7.
