SPORTS SPOTS
Jerry Smith
There are many reasons sports fans can look back on this week and term it “The week that was.” There are so many events of impact happening on the sports’ scene this week on both a local and national level. A look at some of them makes it necessary to back up into last week just a little. We will begin by considering a big football game last Friday night.
Sonoraville Phoenix victory over Adairsville
There is no way any football fan in Region 6-AAA can minimize the importance of last Friday’s matchup of Sonoraville and Adairsville. Both teams are in contention for playoff spots and every win contributes to a more favorable seeding.
As most know Coach Jim Kremer’s Phoenix displayed a very proficient game and defeated the Tigers 35-0. And for all those who give this writer fits for not giving local teams favorable attention and/or praise on their accomplishments, let me share with you the text mes- sage I sent to Coach Kremer after his win (and before he actually settled down). I said (and I paraphrase because I lost my original message, “Congratulations on your victory tonight. It had to be a very rewarding victory for you.” His reply was “Indeed it was.” And Coach Kremer later texted me “Thank you Coach Smith.”
From experience and observation I know that defeating a team where you had previously coached has to rate high on the pleasure scale. Anyway, congratulations to Coach Kremer and his enjoyable weekend.
Calhoun Jackets invade Phoenix Territory
Adding to the week that was, is the fact Coach Hal Lamb will be taking his Jackets (and the Calhoun Band) to Sonoraville on Friday night for a very important game for both teams. I do not hesitate to say that the refusing to allow Calhoun’s band to play at halftime a few seasons ago was one of the tackiest moves I am aware of in interscholastic football competition. Whoever made the decision displays a warped mind. No reasoning can justify the move. I can imagine the reason.
Back to the football issue: Coach Kremer has taken the Phoenix to a higher degree of respectability and competiveness during his tenure at Sonoraville. The crowd will be large and it will be involved. It is still here the conviction that Coach Lamb and his staff will guide their team to another victory over Sonoraville.
