Medicare open enrollment mobile unit visiting Calhoun Oct. 24

- By Brandi Owczarz

GeorgiaCares, in partnership with Fort Valley State University, is bringing a mobile unit to Gordon County Department of Family and Children Services, located at 619 Mauldin Road in Calhoun, this Monday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The service is provided to assist seniors and other qualifiers with Medicare open enrollment, which is taking place now through Dec. 7.

Medicare, the f ederal health insurance program for those aged 65 and older, along with those who have certain disabilities, offers the open enrollment period each year for changes to be made to health insurance coverage, which i ncludes adding, dropping or changing how those on Medicare receive their benefits. According to GeorgiaCares, Medicare’s open enrollment period is the time to review current coverage, compare it with other available options, and weigh whether it will remain the best choice in the coming year.

“These choices and decisions can be confusing for me and I’m also the caregiver and adviser for my parents and their medicare choices,” said Roberta Charbonneau, coordinator of Family Connection of Gordon County. “Having the opportunity to have a one- on- one meeting with a Medicare navigator is wonderful. And, they will be here in Calhoun with ten computer stations to help our seniors.”

Fort Valley State University is proving a 48- foot mobile unit to be used, with 10 stations and a printer to help those signing up or making changes. GeorgiaCares will be on hand Monday to offer one- on- one Medicare counseling, enrollment f or Medicare Advantage or Part D Plan, help in registrations on www. mymedicare. gov and review of Medicare Summary Notices.

According to its website, GeorgiaCares is a public- private partnership administered by the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services. GeorgiaCares is a volunteer- based program that provides free, unbiased and factual information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers with health and drug plans.

GeorgiaCares counseling services are free, providing non- biased opinions. GeorgiaCares is not affiliated with any insurance company, not does it sell or solicit insurance.
