City of Calhoun recognizes Retired Educators Day
Calhoun Mayor Jimmy Palmer, along with members of the Calhoun Gordon County Retired Educators Association, recently recognized Sunday, Nov. 6, by signing a proclamation declaring that day Retired Educators Day in the City of Calhoun.
The proclamation states that the Governor of the State of Georgia, Nathan Deal, has proclaimed that day Retired Educators Day to recognize the more than 118,000 retired educators in the state.
More than 26,000 of those educators are members of the Georgia Retired Educators Association.
Calhoun Gordon County Retired Educators Association is the local chapter of the Georgia Retired Educators Association and is open to any retired teacher, parapro, administrator, bus driver, custodian or lunchroom worker that receives a check from the Teacher Retirement System of Georgia. Members volunteer at local schools, Gordon Hospital, churches, the Voluntary Action Center, area food banks, community projects, Harris Arts Center, nursing homes, CalhounGordon County Library and other various organizations.
The organization collects a different school supply each month that is then divided and donated to each area school. They also use donations from both members and non-members and raised funds to award scholarships to three students in Calhoun and Gordon County who will pursue a degree in education.
