Gordon Central wins Region One Act Play

- By Brandi Owczarz

The Gordon Central Performing Arts Alliance, under the direction of Dr. Kim Watters, is celebrating the first- place win of Gordon Central High School’s One Act Play, “Godspell,” in Region 7-AA competition held at Model High School on Thursday, Oct. 27. In addition to the first place win, four GC students were named to the All Star Cast: Mason Dockery, Ryan Morrell, Elizabeth Dutch and Abby Hoover. The show now travels to Milledgeville for the State AA competition at Baldwin High School on Nov 12.

“I love these students and directors,” said Watters. “They have poured their hearts into this production and it reflects in their performance. We are moved every time we run the show and we hope our audience is, too. The story is timeless, the music is epic, and the result is an experience that proves the power of theatre.”

“’ Godspell’ is a wonderful production, and we have adapted it to a modern- day music festival,” said Laura Rincon, a senior at GCHS and this year’s Theatre House Manager.

The production was originally directed by John- Michael Tebelak and produced by Edgar Lansbury, Stuart Duncan and Joseph Beruh on the New York stage, with music and new song lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

“Students attending the festival are followers of Jesus Christ,” said Rincon. “They spread Christ’s word through their songs and dances. The strongest point of the show is to build a community of believers who continue the work of Jesus Christ after his death.”

According to Rincon, auditions were held for the production at the end of summer break. “The students have worked hard since then to get the production going,” said Rincon. “The choreography, the music and the story line are wonderful and will move any audience to sing and dance along.”

The play now moves to state competition. “The Gordon Central Warriors are proud to represent the 7- AA region in the state GHSA One Act Competition on Nov. 12 at Baldwin High School in Milledgeville,” said Watters. “We are super excited for this hard- working, talented group of student performers and can’t wait to compete with them at the state contest.”

The cast will run the show again on Nov. 8 and 10 at 7 p. m. as a celebration of their season at Gordon Central. Tickets available by emailing kwatters@ gcbe. org or call 706- 879- 5194.
