Warriors host Coosa in season finale

- By Alex Farrer

A long and trying season will come to an end on Friday night for the Gordon Central Warriors, and they would like to have something to feel positive about heading into the offseason.

The Warriors (0-9, 0-6) host Coosa on Friday at Ratner Stadium in a matchup of two teams that are playing for pride at this point as they are both out of the playoff race in the final week of the regular season.

Gordon Central had another tough night last Friday on the road, falling to Rockmart 61-0 as they were held to less than 100 yards of total offense. The Warriors’ leading rusher Branson Towe had a tough night, finishing in the negative in rushing yards as Rockmart had defenders in the backfield all night. Quarterback Martavius Harris threw for 53 yards, but had an interception that turned into Rockmart points a few plays later.

Coosa (3-6, 2-4) is also coming off a loss, falling 24-0 to Model last Friday, but they battled to stay in the game into the third quarter.

The Eagles play a tough brand of football behind head coach Todd Wheeler, who is in his fourth season at the helm. They have several different players that share the load offensively and some size up front on the defensive side of the ball.

Gordon Central has won three out of four alltime against the Eagles, but their only loss came in the teams’ last meeting in 2013 by a 33-6 score.

The Warriors are trying to avoid their second winless season in the past four years. They have won two games total in the time span.

Prediction:

The Warriors have had little success in 2016, and the tough campaign will come to an end on Friday, win or loss.

Gordon Central will be celebrating Senior Night so their seniors will be plenty motivated to go out on their home straight region titles by handling an LFO team that doesn’t have a whole lot of hope coming into this one. The Jackets are just better. They’re bigger, faster, stronger and deeper.

Phil Reeve Stadium will be a celebratory atmosphere on Friday night as the Jackets roll to a region championship-clinching victory and their 122nd straight region win overall. Plus, they should be able to build more momentum heading into the state playoffs.

Calhoun wins, 42-7.

Score:

field for the final time and give a great effort to try to finish things off with a win over a Coosa team that also has no plans past this Friday.

Coosa wins,

Score:

21-14.
